Oʻahu is one of the best Hawaiian islands for hiking, with everything from easy rainforest walks and family-friendly trails to steep mountain ridges with sweeping views of the Pacific. You can hike to waterfalls, explore volcanic craters, wander through lush tropical valleys, or catch a spectacular sunrise over the coastline.
Makapuʻu Point Lighthouse Trail
Breathtaking views of the indigo Pacific Ocean and whale watching in winter months. Follow a paved uphill path along Oʻahu’s southeastern coastline for expansive ocean views, dramatic sea cliffs and a look at the historic lighthouse below.
Koko Crater Railway Trail
An exposed, steep climb with no shade. Take on a serious workout climbing hundreds of old railroad ties up the side of a volcanic crater. The relentless ascent rewards you with sweeping views over the southeastern coastline and surrounding landscape.
Kaʻena Point Trail
A more off-the-beaten-path hike. Explore a rugged coastal landscape of lava rock, tide pools, seabirds and wide-open Pacific views. At the island’s remote western tip, the natural area offers a quieter, wilder experience than the popular trails near Honolulu.
Diamond Head Summit Trail
O’ahu’s most iconic landmark and a must-do for first-time visitors, especially early in the morning. Climb through a volcanic crater, past historic military bunkers and through a tunnel to panoramic views of Waikīkī and the Pacific.
Mānoa Falls Trail
A lush hike not far from Waikiki. Wander beneath towering trees, tropical foliage and bamboo through a lush rainforest valley before reaching a beautiful waterfall.
