If you’re dead-set on going way, way west, Shoreline Hotel Waikiki and its sister site Coconut Waikiki are both offering Leap Day Deals: Book a trip before Feb. 29 for between now and May 31, and you can get a 29% discount.

A few steps from the lively Waikiki promenade, this boutique hotel in the sign of fluorescent colors is a young choice and with a convenient quality-price ratio. Do not miss a dip at sunset in the swimming pool on the rooftop (on the left). The restaurant of the Shoreline boutique hotel (see page 134) is one of the best options for healthy eating in Waikiki. Fresh fish, organic meat and vegetables grown on the organic farms of Oahu are the ingredients for a dinner full of Hawaiian colors and flavors.

There’s no monochromatic minimalism here: Shoreline is a summer holiday in the form of a building. Walls and floors are teal and pink and sunshine yellow, lighting in the common areas changes colour and the 135 rooms feature maps of islands, turquoise toilet seat covers and a stash of Hawaiian snacks. It’s one block back from Kalakaua Avenue and Waikiki Beach.

There’s a place and time for a minimalist, monochromatic aesthetic—but the Shoreline Hotel Waikiki on Oahu is thankfully anything but. The 135-room property located one block from Waikīkī Beach recently unveiled a splashy new lobby (pictured) with neon lights, marigold-hued wingback chairs, and a 26-foot-high “jungle wall.”

Best of the West

Modern Hawaiiana is the name of the game at Oahu's most eye-catching new lodging. Your phone may die before you can capture every gorgeous detail.

The Shoreline Hotel Waikiki underwent a $4 million renovation to fit its new theme, “Neon Meets Nature.” The vibrant redesign — with colorful backdrops throughout the hotel — is ideal for guests seeking great photo opportunities during their vacation.

With sweeping views of the Pacific, an abundance of flowers, and bright colors everywhere, it’s kind of surprising that Hawaii doesn’t have much of a design scene. We mean, what better way to complement the archipelago’s stunning landscape than with equally beautiful interiors?

Nature meets neon. That’s the concept the New York office of BHDM Design was tasked with when repositioning the Shoreline Hotel Waikiki in Honolulu’s most tourist-clogged area. Originally built as housing for flight attendants on long-haul layovers, the 135-room hotel’s new look, complete with red corridors and topographic corrugated plastic maps of Hawaii over the beds, was informed by the state’s rampant foliage and wildlife, all seen through a saturated lens.

Some people go to Hawaii for the surf. Others go for the sun. Never would one book their trip for the hotel alone… that is, until now. A sea of electric blues, fiery reds, and fluorescent pinks, the Shoreline Hotel Waikiki—a boutique stay in Honolulu—recently unveiled its new, design-forward look following an electric renovation led by BHDM Design.

When we began crafting this section it was with one question in mind: Who are the fresh faces of hospitality? “Fresh” here doesn’t necessarily mean young or even new, but rather those players hitting their stride by bringing imagination and innovation to the sector.

Shoreline Hotel Waikiki unveiled its major property renovation, with design by BHDM Design. The 135-room boutique property underwent colorful updates including a 26-foot high white “jungle wall” art piece in the lobby, custom furnishings, and an updated rooftop pool deck with commissioned mural artwork, along with new hotel programming for guests and locals.
